A Complete Treatise on Cast and Wrought Iron Bridge Construction, including Iron Foundations. In three parts: theoretical, practical and descriptive

London, Lockwood, 1870 [third edition, carefully revised and considerably enlarged]/ [1857].

Very large quarto, two volumes (one of text, the other of plates). Volume 1: xvi, 264, [2] (list of other works by the author) pages plus 8 plates (5 folding), 9 diagrams (2 folding), and a large albumen paper photograph frontispiece (203 × 257 mm, with the top slightly arched) of the Royal Albert Bridge over the River Tamar, Saltash, with one girder raised - the bridge is by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, THE PHOTOGRAPH IS BY ROGER FENTON. Volume 2: [vi] pages plus 98 engraved plates (95 of them double-page, the other 3 of them three-page) and a tinted lithographic frontispiece of the Taptee Viaduct, India.

Original half morocco and stippled cloth; leather a little rubbed, with trifling surface loss; spines a little marked and unevenly sunned, with a neatly sealed short tear to the head of the front joint of the first volume; long clean tears to two leaves of text and one of the three-page plates, and short tears along the folds of some plates, expertly sealed; tiny blank corner piece torn from one plate; small pale tidemark to one leading margin; contemporary government departmental stamp on each half-title; new endpapers in the first volume; an excellent set.

All of the plates in the second volume relate to specific bridges: one double-page plate gives details of the 'Bridge over Salt Water River, Melbourne and Williams Town Railway, Victoria' (and one of the diagrams in the first volume shows its curve of strains). [2 items].
