The Fortieth. A Record of the 40th Battalion, AIF

Hobart, John Vail, Government Printer, for the 40th Battalion Association, 1922.

Octavo, viii, 248 pages plus a frontispiece and 12 folding maps at the rear (numbered 1-10, 10a, and 11).

Red cloth with decorative lettering and an illustration printed in white ink on the front cover (with some loss to the white ink, as often); cloth lightly marked and a little scuffed (confined mainly to the rear cover); plain spine sunned; light wear to the extremities; edges and the leading margin of the last few leaves a little foxed; small stain to the top corner of all edges, bleeding very slightly into some margins at the corner tip; acidic endpapers offset; trifling signs of use; overall a very good copy.

The front flyleaf is inscribed and signed by the author to Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Thomas Paterson, Commanding Officer of the 39th Battalion, and the author of that battalion's history. 'Dear Colonel Paterson, I would be honored by your acceptance of this unpretentious volume, in remembrance of the brotherhood that existed between the 39th and 40th Battalions, and also of our personal regard for yourself. Yours very sincerely, F.C. Green.' Dornbusch 314; Fielding and O'Neill, page 229; Trigellis-Smith 238.
