The Salisbury Affair

The Salisbury Affair

South Melbourne, Sun Books, 1979.

Small octavo, xviii, 351 pages plus 8 pages of plates.

Flush-cut colour pictorial card covers slightly rubbed; top corner of pages 17-80 a little creased; a very good copy.

'The sacking of the English-born police commissioner of South Australia, Harold Salisbury, was an event with few parallels in the Western world. This action by the Labor Government of former Premier Don Dunstan created a political uproar, polarised public opinion and led to a royal commission' (publisher's blurb). 'The royal commission found that Salisbury had misled the government and that there were grounds for his removal from office' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). This copy is inscribed, dated (1 October 1982) and signed by Harold Salisbury (1915-1991) to a former colleague, a senior detective: 'Peter Giles. Keep the old flag flying. Good luck. Harold Salisbury'.
