Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (1945-2001) was the 11th King of Nepal. Although he succeeded his father in 1972, the coronation ceremony did not take place until 24 February 1975, the publication date of this commemorative issue of the directory. King Birendra died in the 2001 massacre when the heir to the throne, Prince Dipendra, killed nine members of the royal family before committing suicide.
