The albumen paper photograph (90 × 55 mm) is mounted as issued on the printed card of Mathewson, Brisbane; the firm was active in Queen Street, Brisbane at least from the 1870s to the 1890s. This image probably dates from the 1870s. The lad appears too young to be a cadet, which raises the possibility that this is a costume based on a European uniform.
