Percy Reginald Stephensen (1901-1965) was an Australian writer, publisher and political activist; he established the short-lived Mandrake Press (1929-30), primarily to publish a book of D.H. Lawrence's controversial paintings. Among the 32 items published by the Press were books by Aleister Crowley, and these two black-letter volumes, rare in our experience.

Number 137 of only 200 signed copies. This copy has three unpublished poems by the author written in ink in his hand on three of the blank pages at the rear. The poems are 'Inscription in the Grainger Museum', 'The DBC Poems - Inscription for Portrait' and 'Inscription for a 'Bra-bar''. A note to this effect is written on the front flyleaf (probably by a previous owner, one of the subscribers, Professor T. Hytten).

A superb example of the book arts from the Loujon Press, printed in red, black and blue on fine papers, with an original portrait photograph of the author and numerous illustrations and facsimiles, and an introduction by Lawrence Durrell. This is one of only 11 copies of the 'Black Oasis letter & signature edition', signed and dated (6/6/66) by the author, and with each one identified by a letter from his name; this is copy 'M'. The publisher's certificate to this effect is loosely inserted. Tipped in at the rear is an autograph letter signed by Miller (foolscap folio on his personal letterhead, dated 3/24/66). The reasonably long letter (about 115 words) is addressed to the publisher, Jon Webb, and it relates to the publication of this book. Miller comments on the various portrait photographs he has sent, and which one he prefers; he refers to getting on with translating the French passages, and stresses that 'Hans' must be included in the title.

Number 41 of only 50 numbered copies signed by both the author and artist. The author is Sir Edward James Ranembe Morgan (1900-1977), a judge in both the Commonwealth Industrial Court and the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory when he retired in 1960. This copy is inscribed to 'Alick and Mary Downer / From the author / 1976' (Sir Alexander Russell Downer and his wife). Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed by the author to 'Dear Alick' (small octavo, 2 pages, dated 4 March 1976), in which he explains the work ('The stories are by me, and they are fiction, so it is hopeless to try the game of trying to guess who is who'); the limited production ('50 numbered copies of the book signed ... and three unsigned and unnumbered.... It was not published; all copies were made for me to give away'); and the cover illustrations ('The two end-pieces are misleading as they are too Morgan and Netherby' - fortunately he explains this at length!). Also loosely inserted is a carbon copy of a typed key to the 'faceless' people depicted in these illustrations; it is dated 12 December 1975, which may narrow down the date of production.
